Peripheral neuropathy is a nerve disorder typically felt in the legs and feet and, less often, in the arms and hands.
What causes Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy can develop for many reasons. Below are some of the most common causes:
Diabetes
Physical Injuries
Viral Infections
Chemical Exposure
Exposure to harmful substances, including some medications, chemotherapy and excessive alcohol, can cause nerve damage. In some cases, neuropathy is a known side effect of a necessary medication; in others, it’s an unintended consequence that requires attention if symptoms arise.
What are the symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy?
Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy can vary but usually involve some combination of numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” feeling, especially in the hands and feet. In some cases, even light touch can cause discomfort, and pain may feel sharp, burning, or throbbing. Often, the symptoms are worse at night and interfere with sleeping. Patients often report feeling like they’re walking on marbles or on cotton balls.
